Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a modern cabling technology in which Ethernet data cables power the local area network (LAN) devices rather than separate DC power lines. To regulate and manage the functioning of these wires efficiently, a PoE controller is used which acts as a power sourcing equipment to several devices such as IP cameras, wireless access points, VoIP phones, etc. Moreover, these PoE controllers are also assigned the responsibility of checking the compatibility of various gadgets with respect to the different ethernet standards, including IEEE 802.3af, IEEE 802.3bt, and 802.3at.

Innovations in power over ethernet controllers driving industry growth

The power over ethernet controller industry accounted for $1.3 billion in 2023 and is anticipated to gather a revenue of $3.7 billion by 2033, registering a CAGR of 11.7% during 2024-2033. The various advantages offered by PoE controllers are estimated to boost the revenue share of the market in the coming period. These devices make wired Ethernet networks less complex and easier to install. Furthermore, the overall cost of repair and maintenance is also reduced significantly. Many commercial enterprises and industries use PoE controllers to centralize the energy-sourcing mechanism, which ultimately helps administrators monitor the performance of various devices closely. Additionally, these gadgets allow easy scaling of the Ethernet network without overloading the already-installed power infrastructure.

In the last few years, the emergence of advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence has led to the development of innovative PoE controller solutions. IoT, for instance, has broadened the scope of connected devices and led to the development of smart devices. These networks generate huge volumes of data that traditional storage models are unable to handle and process. In such scenarios, PoE controllers help manage high-density, widely spread power systems efficiently.

Along with this, AI-based tools are being used to enhance the data processing capabilities of power over ethernet controllers and enable them to work more ‘smartly’. Also, machine learning algorithms are deployed to program the devices to manage the network traffic seamlessly. ML-powered PoE gadgets are capable of automatically adjusting their output based on usage patterns and power efficiency. Moreover, these tools can forecast the issues and problems that are likely to arise in the future, thus improving the predictive maintenance capabilities of the controller.

The development of Energy Efficient Ethernet (IEEE 802.3az), also called Green Ethernet, has also played an important role in the growth of the industry. The specialized controllers used for this technology utilize twisted-pair and backplane Ethernet computer networking techniques, which brings down the power consumption of the network by around 50%. Additionally, the reduction in the overall number of wires and cables in the network due to the installation of power over ethernet controllers further lowers the carbon footprint of the entire infrastructure significantly.

Launch of high-tech PoE controllers by major companies boosting sector’s revenue share

Over the years, several semiconductor manufacturing and fabrication companies have invested heavily in R&D activities related to designing advanced power over ethernet controllers. Several enterprises have even developed state-of-the-art gadgets to address the evolving demands of the ICT sector. For instance, in February 2023, Legrand, an electrical infrastructure components developer, and Superior Essex Communications, a communications cable developer in North America, jointly unveiled the new nCompass System, an ethernet cabling solution. Designed for IoT and AI-based applications, this high-tech device improves overall power efficiency and simplifies the deployment of important IT and OT equipment.

Similarly, in October 2024, Microchip Technology, a multinational semiconductor manufacturing corporation, announced the launch of PD77728 PoE PSE Manager and PD77020 PoE PSE Controller, specifically designed for IEEE 802.3bt compliance. The power over ethernet controller features a low port resistance of 160 milliohms to reduce internal losses and enhance the overall power efficiency of the device. Furthermore, the gadget’s surge-focused design and high integration capability make it ideal for IP security cameras and phones.

The power over the ethernet controller industry, in essence, is expected to witness huge growth on account of the increasing use of smart gadgets and connected devices. Additionally, the emergence of AI and IoT is anticipated to maximize the revenue share of the market in the near future. Furthermore, the rising investment by leading companies is predicted to open new avenues of growth in the sector in the coming period.
