Innovation and existing issues are at the center stage as manufacturers develop new products. They have been investing in R&D activities to come up with a product that would play a crucial part in prohibiting the coronavirus and reduce the possibility of cross-contamination through surfaces. Moreover, researchers at various universities have been developing eco-friendly and transparent new products. Manufacturers and researchers have been trying to develop anti-viral coating materials that can be applied on any surfaces and withstand any conditions. The demand for such coatings will increase in the coming years from various sectors. According to the report published by Allied Market Research, the anti-viral coatings market is expected to reach $1.3 billion by 2027. Following are some of the recent activities taking place in the industry that would shape the coming years.

The launch of new products to address current issues is one of the major strategies adopted by market players. Stardust Powder Coatings, one of the leading power coatings manufacturers, launched an anti-viral coating that can restrain the coronavirus NL63. These coatings can be applied on the metal surfaces such as furniture and lighting systems. Once the coating prohibits the virus from surviving on the surfaces, the possibility of cross contamination can be reduced. The company began the development of anti-viral coating in March 2021. The efforts have come to fruition and it came up with a new product for ensuring surface hygiene.

Guido Pozzoli, the Chief Executive Officer at Stardust Powder Coatings, highlighted that the objective of the company is to develop a coating with anti-viral properties for any finish and color. Moreover, this coating can be utilized for any application. The development of such product would enable the company in improving permanent hygiene of surfaces along with providing defense against hazardous viruses such as coronavirus. The development of such coating materials would play a significant part in reducing cross-contamination of viruses.

The trend of development of new coating materials continues with researchers offering innovative and eco-friendly anti-viral surface coating materials. A team of researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) developed anti-viral coating material for surfaces. This coating material provides an effective protection against the non-pathogenic viruses. Moreover, it is transparent, eco-friendly, and non-toxic. This coating can become an alternative to coating materials made up of copper or silver. These coating materials are toxic, non-transparent, and harms environment. The material developed by researchers at IITGN utilizes raw materials that are available in nature in abundance.

Researchers outline that the material can be applied on various indoor and outdoor surfaces such as glass, steel, silicon, metal, and Teflon. This makes the anti-viral coating material suitable for application on glass doors, doorknobs, wooden furniture, household electronic appliances, handles, vehicles, and others. Moreover, the strong adhesiveness enables the coating to stay intact even after multiple washes and exposure to sunlight. This keeps the anti-viral activity almost same and offers strong protection. The innovative offerings are expected to change the scenario of industry as consumers prefer environmental friendly products.
