Highlights:
The growing disposable incomes of people living in developed countries have increased the demand for different consumer goods. Along with this, advancements in material sciences have led to the development of new materials such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) which have become a major raw material for different retail products such as containers, bottles, canisters, vessels, etc. They are essentially tubes that act as precursors to finished PET products, thus acting as an intermediate commodity in the plastic manufacturing supply chain.
In the last few years, various end-use sectors, including food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, and personal care and lifestyle products have witnessed a huge surge in demand for PET preforms. The PET preforms industry accounted for $23.0 billion in 2022 and is anticipated to gather a revenue of $35.4 billion by 2032 at a CAGR of 4.5% during 2023-2032. The non-reactive nature of PET has been the main reason behind the increased use of this material in the production of different packaging solutions. The inert nature of the polymer compounds used in PET preforms helps preserve the food and beverage items without any chance of contamination and damage. This property makes them ideal, especially in the pharmaceutical and food & beverages industries, wherein maintaining the purity of the stored items is of paramount importance. Along with this, its lightweight and cost-effective nature has further increased its popularity in the cosmetics and healthcare industries.
Industry 4.0 manufacturing techniques creating new investment opportunities in the landscape of PET preforms
As the demand for PET-based compounds has grown, companies operating in the PET preforms industry have invested heavily in modern manufacturing techniques. These new production processes not only help develop improved versions of these intermediary goods but also have better fabrication capacities. For instance, the advent of co-injection molding methodology has been one of the major developments in the domain. This technology allows manufacturers to use two different PET materials simultaneously in the same mold cavity, thus developing a layered preform material with improved performance parameters such as strength and durability.
Apart from co-injection, over-molding is another innovative production technique that has emerged in the PET preform industry. Developed by StackTeck Systems Ltd., a leading industrial automation company, this system features a rotary cube that provides manufacturers with two preform molds and injection units. These compartments are specifically designed to inject a base material and an over-molding compound at the same time. This aids companies in manufacturing PET products of different shapes, sizes, and colors, thereby enhancing their overall aesthetics. Also, the operational efficiency and precision offered by the over-molding technique are much higher as compared to conventional production processes.
Increased transition toward sustainability impacting the industry positively
The PET preforms industry has traditionally been criticized for its major contribution to environmental degradation. Over the years, the waste generated by PET manufacturing companies has been a major source of air and water pollution. Naturally, civil societies, governments, and environmental think tanks have suggested the use of eco-friendly materials to reduce the carbon footprint of the sector. Moreover, the rising awareness regarding climate change and global warming has led to a gradual increase in demand for recycled products. Accordingly, companies have started shifting to environmentally sustainable compounds to decarbonize their operations and cater to the evolving dynamics of the industry. Consequently, the popularity of recycled PET preforms has surged substantially.
For instance, in October 2023, Coca-Cola India, a leading carbonated drinks enterprise, announced the launch of recycled PET (rPET) bottles of 250 ml and 750 ml sizes. The press release issued by the company stated that Moon Beverages Ltd., and SLMG Beverages Ltd., two key beverage firms have been assigned the contract to manufacture these bottles on behalf of Coca-Cola. Enrique Ackermann, Vice President of the Technical and Innovation Department, Coco-Cola India, emphasized that the product launch is in line with the company’s policy to develop eco-friendly packaging solutions, thus contributing to a greener and safer planet.
In November 2024, revalyu Resources, a plastic bottle recycling company, unveiled its second PET recycling plant in Nashik, a developing metropolitan city in India. The opening of this new facility has upgraded the recycling capacity of the company to over 20 million used PET bottles, thereby making revalyu Resources a major player in the industry. Dr. Vivek Tandon, Founder of the revalyu Group highlighted in the press statement that the enterprise has invested in new glycolysis-based recycling technologies and other such innovations to further reduce the carbon emissions caused by PET recycling processes.
Winding up, the PET preforms industry is expected to gain a significant revenue share in the coming period due to the rising applicability of PET-based packaging materials in the food & beverage, pharmaceutical, and consumer goods industries. Moreover, the advent of Industry 4.0 PET manufacturing processes has further created favorable conditions for the growth of the industry.
