Over the past few years, polymer emulsions have been gaining attention in various industries due to their environmentally friendly properties, versatility, and cost-effectiveness. These polymer dispersions have transformed various sectors including adhesives, paints and coatings, textiles and papers, and many others. Furthermore, the growth of the polymer emulsion market is attributed to the increased demand for sustainable and eco-friendly solutions. Additionally, advanced technologies are playing a vital role in expanding the application areas of polymer emulsions.
According to a recent report by Allied Market Research, the polymer emulsion market is predicted to illustrate a noteworthy CAGR from 2023 to 2032.
Polymer emulsion refers to the dispersion of polymer particles in water or other liquids, stabilized by hydrophilic agents. This is a type of colloid in which the polymer chains are suspended in droplets during the liquid phase. The size of polymer particles in emulsions can range from nanometers to micrometers. Polymer emulsions can be synthetic or bio-based depending on their structural composition and the polymerization process. Thus, polymer emulsions are distinguished by their high molecular weight, rapid polymerization rate, and eco-friendly properties.
The paints and coatings industry is shaping the polymer emulsion market-
The paints and coatings industry is the largest user of polymer emulsions. Paints and coatings products are widely used in various sectors, such as automotive, construction, and packaging. In the building and construction sector, emulsified polymers are used in the production process of architectural paints, exterior paints with high strength, everlasting, and wet adhesion, interior paints with a strong grip, flooring and decorations, as well as elastomeric coatings and stains. On the other hand, the construction of residential and commercial buildings is on the rise all over the world, which is further increasing the use for polymer emulsions in architectural paint and coatings production.
Furthermore, the automotive industry is one of the fastest-growing sectors to grow in terms of production, and their ongoing efforts and innovations in the development of new car launches and efforts to innovate electric vehicles (EV), are likely to drive the automotive sector’s growth while increasing the demand and production of paints and coatings.
Recent key developments by players-
Some of the key players are forming strategies, and collaborative partnerships to strengthen their position and increase their market share and probability. Top companies such as The Lubrizol Corporation, Asahi Kasei Corporation, Dow Inc., Univar Solutions, and Wacker Chemie AG. For example, UNIVAR SOLUTIONS B.V., a subsidiary of Univar Solutions Inc., has announced a new distribution agreement for Dow’s Acrylic Emulsion Polymer products in the UK and Ireland in February 2023. This distribution relationship will offer new products to customers in the region that produces building and construction products, including elastomeric roof coating, fillers, ceramic tile adhesives, architectural coatings, and nonwoven products.
Another key development, in November 2021, Shell Eastern Petroleum Ltd. (SEPL) entered into a partnership agreement with Asahi KASEI Corporation. The purpose of the collaboration was to provide a bio-based solution to produce high-performance polarized styrene-butadiene latex. It is a type of plastic coating that can be used as it's safe for the environment and non-toxic.
Since polymers emulsions are water-based and low in VOCs, they're better for the environment than solvent-based alternatives. This has changed consumer preferences and manufacturers are more likely to use them if they want to meet sustainability standards and strict regulations. Thus, the polymer emulsion market is significantly growing by increasing demand from various industries and the need for eco-friendly solutions.
