Highlights:
PVC rigid foam is a unique plastic material made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that is designed to have a distinctive foam structure. PVC resin powder is the main component of this material and makes up to 70% of its weight. Furthermore, activated light calcium carbonate is also added to the mixture during manufacturing processes to increase its dimensional stability. Additionally, foaming aids such as zinc and azodicarbonamide, zinc, and other additives are also a part of these rigid foams, which optimize their performance in the long run. Over the years, different types of PVC rigid foams have been developed for decorative, construction, transportation, and other applications.
Rising preference for PVC-based materials helping the industry flourish
In the last few years, the use of PVC rigid foams has increased in various end-use industries, including construction, manufacturing, transportation, and consumer goods. The rising applicability of these materials is mainly attributed to their lightweight nature. Compared to conventional items like wood, PVC foam boards are significantly lighter, making them ideal for different indoor and outdoor applications. For instance, PVC rigid foams have become the first choice of signage panel manufacturers as they can be easily printed upon and installed.
Also, the structural integrity and strength offered by PVC boards are quite high, making them perfect for construction activities. As opposed to wood, PVC boards can easily withstand harsh climatic conditions, thereby increasing their utility in various public infrastructure projects. While wood can easily rot after coming in frequent contact with water, PVC boards are built to last, thus increasing the durability of the entire project. Moreover, these boards offer chemical and UV resistance, thus increasing their usability in regions with extreme weather.
In addition to this, the versatility and cost effectiveness offered by these materials have increased their use in the consumer goods industry drastically. The additive and compounds used in their manufacturing improve their thermal and sound insulation qualities. As a result, these materials are widely used in the construction of walls, partitions, etc. The flame-retardant properties of polyvinyl chloride have led to a surge in the use of these rigid boards for furniture items like cupboards, kitchen cabinets, and bedroom doors.
Strategic alliances among leading companies opening new avenues for growth
The PVC rigid foam industry accounted for $2.0 billion in 2023 and is predicted to gather a revenue of $3.1 billion by 2033, rising at a CAGR of 4.3% during 2024-2033. The M&A deals signed by major businesses in the market have impacted the sector positively in recent times. For instance, in February 2021, SIMONA AG, a plastics pipe company based in Germany, announced the acquisition of 70% of the shares in MT Plastik AS, a Turkish plastic material manufacturer. MT Plastik AS was one of the biggest PVC product suppliers to the construction and manufacturing industry. The business deal helped SIMONA AG to expand its operational presence across the globe and strengthen its position in the sector.
Similarly, in April 2021, Peachtree City Foamcraft, a leading manufacturer of foamcore monument signs, issued a press release highlighting the acquisition of The New Kit, a PVC sign developer. Through this M&A deal, Peachtree City Foamcraft integrated the entire product portfolio, including PVC panels, signboards, and address plaques, into its existing supply chain.
To summarize, the PVC rigid foam industry is expected to gather huge revenue in the coming period due to increasing applicability of these materials in construction and manufacturing activities. The various advantages offered by PVC foams and the strategic alliances signed by different players in the sector are anticipated to accelerate the growth rate of the market in the near future.
