A company specializing in bio-based materials for packaging, Sway, has disclosed its receipt of a SBIR (Small Business Innovation and Research) grant from the NSF (National Science Foundation). Sway intends to diversify its feedstock portfolio by incorporating elements such as unrefined seaweed, processing byproducts, and invasive macroalgae.
Sway has stated that their Thermoplastic Seaweed Resin (TPSea) holds the potential for converting seaweed into adaptable packaging solutions, such as retail bags, polybags, mailers, food packaging, and pouches. The material is compatible with the current plastic processing infrastructure for ease of use. The funding is utilized to expand the production of the company's next-generation biodegradable product, predominantly made from seaweed and capable of undergoing a melting process.
