Surgical procedures encompass a wide variety of tools and components. One of the aspects of these methods is the management and closure of wounds, particularly the non-invasive procedures. After surgery, wounds typically require several days to heal, and surgeons must close them in a manner that minimizes bleeding and reduces the risk of infection. This essential task is accomplished through the use of surgical equipment and techniques, collectively referred to as surgical sutures.

Surgical sutures are the most frequently used medical devices in surgeries. They are designed to hold body tissues together following an injury or surgical procedure. With the advancements in technology, modern sutures provide doctors with a diverse range of  sutures, available in various sizes, shapes, and thread materials to suit different medical needs.

Advances in materials used in surgical sutures

The surgical sutures industry has witnessed notable growth in the last few years due to the increasing advancements in materials that have offered innovative options in wound healing. Recently developed thermoplastic polyurethane elastic sutures have emerged as a promising option for midline laparotomy wound closures. These sutures exhibit significant tensile strength and an impressive mean elastic elongation of 56% after 10 cycles. They help prevent post-operative complications such as a burst abdomen. Their design ensures secure closure while allowing for natural movement of the body.

Moreover, shape-memory polymers (SMPs) represent a groundbreaking development in suture technology. SMPs are able to return from a temporary state to the original state when stimulated by external energy sources, such as heat, light, or electric fields. This capability allows SMP joints to facilitate self-tightening wound closures, simplifying the surgical process, particularly in minimally invasive procedures like keyhole surgery.

Furthermore, the coated vicryl plus antibacterial suture, developed by Ethicon, features a triclosan coating designed to significantly reduce the risk of surgical site infections (SSI). This antibacterial agent is noncytotoxic and effectively prevents bacterial adhesion, making it a valuable tool in surgical procedures. Studies have shown that using triclosan-coated sutures leads to a notable decrease in SSI rates compared to standard sutures, enhancing patient safety and recovery outcomes.

Simultaneously, sutures infused with bioactive molecules, including DNA, growth factors, and silver nanoparticles, are increasingly recognized for their potential to enhance healing and offer therapeutic benefits at the wound site. Silver nanoparticles notably improve antimicrobial properties while reducing the risk of bacterial resistance. This innovative approach accelerates the healing process and contributes to better patient outcomes by addressing infection risks effectively.

Corza Medical’s new sutures for delicate ophthalmic procedures

In October 2024, Corza Medical, a leading global medical technology company introduced its new medical line of Onatec ophthalmic microsurgical joints, at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) conference in Chicago. According to Tom Testa, CEO of Corza Medical, this launch has represented a significant innovation in the ophthalmic surgery market. He added that with Onatec, the company envisioned delivering tailored and high-quality solutions that address the evolving needs of a global market.

Corza Medical has developed Onatec needles crafted from highly tempered stainless steel, which ensures exceptional bending resistance and durability. Their innovative automated manufacturing process allows for the creation of precise needle geometries and accurate grinds, making it possible to stitch delicate tissues in tight spaces effectively. The high-quality surface finish of Onatec needles promotes optimal penetration, resulting in reduced trauma to the tissue and improved patient comfort.

KKR joined hands with Healthium Medtech to expand its global medical device reach

In May 2024, KKR, a US-based global investment giant announced its acquisition of Healthium Medtech Ltd., a renowned Indian medical devices company. Through this agreement, Healthium Medtech aimed to expand its product offerings across over 90 countries, including South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. The firm has five core product areas, which are advanced surgery, arthroscopy, wound care, urology, and consumables. This acquisition has strengthened the position of the company in advanced wound management and infection prevention products.

Endnote

The evolution of surgical suture materials represents a notable innovation in the healthcare industry, significantly improving surgical outcomes. These advanced medical devices effectively facilitate wound closure, promote faster healing, and reduce complications associated with surgical procedures. Moreover, the rising incidences of chronic diseases and the growing demand for minimally invasive surgical procedures are expected to fuel the development of cutting-edge sutures in the future.
