In the past couple of years, cancer treatment options have evolved significantly with the advancements in medical technologies. Cancer/tumor profiling is an advanced investigative tool that offers information about the genes causing cancer. This information plays a vital role in enabling doctors to deliver more targeted treatments to cancer patients.
Through tumor profiling, doctors can determine which therapy is likely to be the most effective for a particular patient. Starting from common cancers, such as breast cancer and carcinoma to molecular profiling of acute leukemia, prostate cancer, and lung cancer can be achieved through tumor profiling. Some molecular profiling tests may use one, two, or an array of technologies such as immunohistochemistry (IHC), Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), Sanger Sequencing, Fragment Analysis, or Pyro Sequencing to uncover information about the cancer.
The prevalence of tumor profiling is rapidly increasing in the medical community globally. This can be carried out relatively quickly i.e. within just one or two weeks after a tissue sample has been obtained. To undertake biopsy of the tumor, the DNA cells are extracted from the tumor and purified before being examined. The fluid used is often blood, but may also be urine, mucus, saliva, tears, semen, or others.
Certain factors such as surge in incidence of cancer across the globe, increase in adoption of cancer biomarkers for tumor profiling, rise in demand for cancer profiling techniques by oncologists for diagnosis or treatment of cancers, and growth in use of next generation sequencing technique for tumor profiling are driving the growth of the market in more than one way.
However, in 2020, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic led to have a negative impact on the growth of the global cancer/tumor profiling market, especially in the initial stage. This is attributed to the implementation of global lockdown which cancelled or delayed several appointments for tumor profiling across the world.
Nevertheless, China is providing lucrative opportunities for the growth of the market, owing to significant development of precision medicine in the country. With this drift on board, the global cancer tumor profiling market is expected to recover in a steady pace while also gathering immense growth in the near future
