  • Ingenious product launches in the sector

Bone grafting is a medical process wherein the damaged or missing bone is replaced or regenerated using certain specialized materials called bone grafts and/or substitutes. This medical treatment procedure is mainly used in cases wherein the underlying bone is either missing or beyond repair. Generally, traumatic injuries, accidents, spinal fusions, tumors, infections, or other joint replacement therapies involve bone grafting surgeries. Moreover, dental implant procedures often require grafts and substitutes to support the underlying tissue, ensuring proper healing and restoring normal bone and tissue function.

Over the years, the rising number of road accidents has increased the demand for bone grafting surgeries across the globe. Moreover, the rise in the proportion of geriatric populations around the world, too, has played a huge role in the growth of the bone grafts and substitutes industry. To cater to the demands of the healthcare sector, many medical experts have designed different types of grafting techniques to address different injuries and ailments properly. For example, autograft is one such example of a treatment mechanism wherein bone tissue is taken from the patient’s body itself and transplanted to the injured area. On the other hand, allograft involves the use of a bone graft obtained from another person. In the last few years, doctors have shifted from using traditional xenografts, i.e., animal-derived bone tissues, to favoring synthetic materials like ceramics and medical polymers.

Advancements in material science contributing to the expansion of the industry

The bone grafts and substitute market accounted for $2.8 billion in 2023 and is predicted to rise at a CAGR of 4.4% during 2024-2033. Technological advancement in the healthcare sector and material science is predicted to create numerous opportunities in the landscape in the coming period. Recently, medical researchers have shifted to Demineralized Bone Matrix (DBM) as a viable autograft and allograft material. DBM refers to a bone graft wherein its inorganic constituents are removed, thus exposing its organic bone proteins. Healthcare studies have shown that DBM is much more biologically active than conventional bone substitutes, thus ensuring faster recovery from the injury. Also, biotechnology experiments have demonstrated that DBM substitutes with better osteoinductive properties offer improved wound-handling capabilities.

In the past few years, cytokines, metabologens, and other growth factors such as bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) have been used in the treatment of different medical conditions such as spinal fusions. The ability of these proteins to stimulate bone growth at the graft site has made them a popular choice in the healthcare industry.

Heavy investments by leading players impacting the landscape positively

Many major biomedical companies have proactively invested in the bone grafts and substitutes industry to expand their footprint across the globe. Some enterprises have even established strategic alliances with their peers to enhance their revenue share in the landscape. In April 2023, ZimVie, a dental products company, announced the expansion of its portfolio with the launch of RegenerOss® Bone Graft Plug and Allograft Particulate. The allograft product has been manufactured using cancellous and cortical bone particles and is specifically designed for various dental applications. On the other hand, the bone graft solutions have been developed to address periodontal defects. Indraneel Kanaglekar, ZimVie Dental’s President, stated that the product launch is in line with the company’s policy to manufacture premium dental implants to comprehensively cater to the evolving dynamics of the sector.

Similarly, in June 2023, Bonesupport, a major biotechnology company, unveiled its antibiotic-eluting bone graft product viz., CERAMENT® G. The company launched an upgraded variant of its product in June 2023, building on the widespread global use of its earlier version by doctors. This next-gen bone graft solution has a higher shelf life and offers better compatibility, thus improving the medical condition of the patient seamlessly.

These product launches have helped the landscape flourish in North America and Asia-Pacific. In the US for example, the massive investments in the healthcare sector by government entities and private companies have strengthened the foothold of the industry in the province. At the same time, the presence of multinational giants such as Medtronic plc, Baxter International Inc., Xtant Medical Holdings, Inc., Zimmer Biomet Holdings, Inc., etc., have opened new avenues for growth in the sector. On the other hand, the rising awareness regarding bone grafts and substitutes in developing countries of India, China, Australia, Japan, etc., has maximized the sector’s revenue share in Asia-Pacific.

In conclusion, the bone grafts and substitutes market is expected to witness substantial growth in the coming period due to the technological advancements in the industry. The adoption of innovative medical solutions such as demineralized bone matrix and bone morphogenetic proteins is anticipated to help the landscape flourish in the coming period.
