In contemporary times, wound care and closure has assumed huge significance. Wounds are now generally classified in four types- clean wounds, clean-contaminated wounds, contaminated wounds, and dry-infected wounds. Each of these types needs different wound care and closure techniques, so that they heal quickly and appropriately.Â
Different types of advanced wound care and closure techniques
Advanced wound care and closure techniques are primarily of three types- primary intention, secondary intention, and tertiary intention. Primary intention is used in case of clean wounds and clean-contaminated wounds. It includes the use of adhesive tapes, staples, and sutures for reducing tissue loss. Secondary intention technique is mainly used for wounds which can’t be closed surgically as the wound edges are pretty wide due to high tissue loss. Thus, secondary intention technique is used for chronic wounds. Also, this technique is used for contaminated and dry-infected wounds. Tertiary intentions, on the other hand, are used in cases where the wound needs delayed closure. Many-a-times, tertiary intention includes use of skin graft or skin substitute.
Product launches by major players in the industry
The advanced wound care and closure industry is a massive one with many healthcare companies engaged in research and development activities. As a result of these R&D activities, many new products have been launched in recent times. For example, Healthium Medtech, in October 2022, announced the launch of Theruptor Novo, a new wound dressing portfolio. The product is typically aimed at wound management of chronic injuries caused by foot ulcers and diabetes.
In January 2023, Convatec, a leading medical device company, announced the acquisition of ConvaFoam™, an advanced wound care and closure solution for different types of wounds and injuries. As per the statement released by Convatec, this product launch will help the company to address the demands of the healthcare sector in a holistic manner.
Potential growth drivers of the market
Increasing prevalence of acute and chronic wounds and injuries has resulted in a growth in awareness regarding wound management. This growing awareness is anticipated to be the primary growth driver of the advanced wound care and closure industry. Moreover, as more wound care products get governmental approvals, their use and demand are bound to increase which will further have a positive impact on the growth of the industry.Â
Based on application, the ulcers segment of the industry is anticipated to garner an absolute revenue of $7,526.52 million from 2022 to 2032 period. On the other hand, the burns and others segments are estimated to collectively hold a revenue of $5,877.47 million during the same period. Based on the region, the industry in India is projected to be the fastest growing with a CAGR of 7.6% during the forecast period.Â
In summary, the expanse of the advanced wound care and closure industry can be adjudged from the fact that different types of wound care techniques have come up in the last few years. Growing prevalence of chronic wounds and innovative product launches will further amplify the scope of the industry.
