Highlights
Ground support equipment (GSE) is a term utilized in the aviation sector to denote the assortment of equipment and tools stationed at airports to assist in aircraft servicing during the interim between flights. The equipment is usually kept on ramps close to terminals for convenient access as required. The main goal of GSE is to guarantee the seamless and safe functioning of aircraft, both upon landing and before departure.
Ground support equipment, comprising passenger boarding steps/stairs, aircraft tugs/tow tractors, aircraft deicing equipment, ground power units (GPUs), baggage handling systems, cargo loaders/unloaders, ground cooling units, aircraft refueling trucks, maintenance stands, various other tools, is indispensable for a multitude of tasks in aircraft servicing, loading, maintenance, and other ground operations. The ground support equipment industry is gaining momentum due to a surge in the focus of airports on improving operational efficiency, expansion and modernization of airports, and a rise in cargo and air traffic. The industry is projected to display a noteworthy CAGR of 6.2% by 2032.
GSE doesn't assist in flying the aircraft, but it is essential for aircraft refueling, cabin services, inspections, cargo handling, maintenance, potable water replenishment, waste tank drainage, catering services, and other tasks. Additionally, during gate operations, GSE ensures passenger and crew comfort by providing air conditioning and electric power.
Advancing Environmental Practices in Aviation with Green GSEs
Aviation regulatory bodies are pursuing enhanced regulations to promote the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices and technologies across the GSE industry. The growing consciousness regarding environmental issues is expected to drive substantial demand for environmentally friendly and more sustainable ground support equipment (GSE) within the aviation sector.
In today's era of a clean and sustainable environment, authorities are emphasizing the acquisition of Ground Support Equipment (GSE) that is environmentally friendly and meets strict government emission standards. By adopting greener GSE, airports can significantly diminish their carbon footprint. This can be achieved through various measures, including opting for powder coating paint instead of liquid paint for GSE, designing equipment that can be folded or disassembled to optimize shipping size, advocating for the use of electric vehicles, and establishing equipment recycling programs. These initiatives showcase how airports can prioritize sustainability in their GSE practices.
Another notable trend is the shift toward electric ground support equipment, which brings many advantages including zero emissions, diminished noise pollution, and decreased operating expenses. Electric tugs, belt loaders, container loaders, luggage tugs, lavatory trucks, and water trucks are already seeing widespread adoption. Progress in battery technology is expanding operating ranges and reducing charging times, making electric GSE increasingly feasible for airport operations.
Transforming ground handling with enhanced GSE solutions
Leading manufacturers in the industry are expanding business by securing contracts with airlines across various countries. They are introducing cutting-edge ground support equipment to meet the increasing demand. Moreover, the modernization and expansion of airports are creating opportunities for GSE manufacturers.
IATA launched a program to promote ground technologies
In May 2024, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) launched a new initiative to speed up the integration of advanced ground support equipment (GSE) technologies into everyday operations. This program promotes the adoption of anti-collision systems on both new and current ground support equipment (GSE) to mitigate the risk of costly aircraft damage on the ramp. The IATA Enhanced GSE Recognition Program unveiled at IATA’s Ground Handling Conference (IGHC), aimed at acknowledging Ground Handling Service Providers (GHSPs) in modernizing their vehicle fleets.
Babcock secured a contract to supply ground support equipment for French defense airfields
Babcock, a UK defense solutions provider, entered a contract to supply ground-based support solutions for the French military's overseas airfields and mainland in November 2023. This agreement includes the ongoing maintenance and management of more than 2,500 pieces of equipment essential for airfield operations, falling under the jurisdiction of the French Ministry of Defense's Directorate of Aeronautical Maintenance. As part of the 10-year program, Babcock provides extensive global support for the existing aircraft operations and air transit abilities of the French military.
In conclusion, the evolving landscape of ground support equipment in aviation highlights a dynamic shift toward sustainability, efficiency, and safety. With advancements in technology and concerted efforts toward environmental sustainability, the industry is projected to meet the demands of modern air travel while reducing environmental impact and enhancing operational excellence.
