  • The growing applicability of cold rolled steel in the construction and automotive sector
  • The rise of the landscape in Asia-Pacific

Cold rolled steel refers to steel that has undergone a cold rolling process which involves the passing of hot steel through a series of rollers at normal room temperature. As a result of the cold rolling process, the steel sheets are compressed, and they are shaped into thinner and finer coils. Apart from removing the impurities in the raw steel, the process also offers a surface finish to the steel coil. Also, due to this process, unlike hot rolled steel, it does not undergo structural changes as the shape is acquired without any application of heat.

Analyzing the growing popularity of cold rolled steel coils in the construction and automotive industry

As said earlier, cold rolling of steel coils helps in removing the impurities from raw steel. Owing to this, the strength of cold rolled steel is much higher as compared to other variants. In fact, engineering studies have shown that the strength of cold rolled steel is 20% higher than that of steel manufactured using conventional processes. Cold rolling processes also provide high stamping performance and higher mechanical properties to the steel. Hence, the steel thus produced is used for manufacturing beams, columns, and other such construction parts. Furthermore, they also form essential building components like floor decking, built-up sections, etc. Not just residential and commercial buildings, cold rolled steel is a widely used raw material for manufacturing railway lines, storage racks, roofing and wall systems, bridges, etc. Thus, in a way, the cold rolled steel coil industry handles a substantial burden of the demand of the entire public and private infrastructure sector.

Along with this, cold rolled steel coil is widely preferred over hot rolled steel sheets, especially due to its wear-resistant and shockproof qualities. As a result, these steel coils find wide applicability in the manufacturing of automotive hardware instruments, seat parts, exhaust pipes, electric motors, fuel tanks, conveyor belts, etc. In the past few years, Industry 4.0 principles have been used to develop smart manufacturing techniques to improve the quality and operational efficiency of automobile companies. Cold rolled steel, it has been found, is perfectly compatible with the new ways of manufacturing and has contributed to the flourishing of the automobile sector.

Moreover, due to the smooth finishing touch offered by cold rolled steel, it is also used in manufacturing household furniture and metal appliances like washing machines, microwave ovens, electric fans, refrigerators, etc. These appliances have a much higher life cycle than those manufactured using traditional raw steel.

Technological advancements and infrastructure development contributing to the industry’s rise in Asia-Pacific

In the recent past, especially after the pandemic period, the construction sector in the developing countries of the Asia-Pacific region has experienced massive growth due to the rising population and increasing urbanization. The demand for residential and commercial buildings has risen steeply and governments in the province are increasingly investing in public infrastructure activities like rail, road, bridges, airports, and ports. Owing to this, the demand for cold rolled steel and its products like coils, sheets, and bars has grown massively, which is expected to create favorable conditions for the growth of the landscape in the coming period.

Apart from this, the technological advancements in the steel production sector are predicted to bring in new avenues of growth in the landscape in the near future. For instance, Tata Steel, a multinational conglomerate, announced the launch of Zeremis® Carbon Lite, a low-CO2 steel material. The company has claimed that the product was launched keeping in mind the growing shift toward environmentally sustainable products and that the new material would bring down the carbon footprint of the automotive and packaging industries significantly. The steel material, as per the statement released by the company, can further be processed using cold rolling techniques also.

To summarize, the key advantages offered by cold rolled steel over conventional types have increased its popularity in the building and construction sector, along with automobile manufacturing and consumer goods landscapes. Furthermore, the launch of several innovative products is anticipated to positively impact the market in the years to come.
