The aviation industry has been constantly evolving over the years by transforming the landscape of powered flight. Electric aircraft are one of those latest innovations that have significantly propelled the growth of the industry. The main thing about these aircraft is that they use electric motors and lithium-ion batteries to drive the plane apart from relying on fossil fuels. The aim behind designing electric aircraft is to reduce carbon emissions and noise pollution, making air travel more sustainable and environmentally friendly. In addition, they also help minimize overall operational costs.

Functioning of electric aircraft

Electric aircraft operate on the principle of electric propulsion. Unlike conventional fuel-powered planes, these aircraft use electric motors that drive propellers or rotors to generate thrust. In these planes, energy is stored in large lithium-ion battery packs, which account for over half the aircraft's weight. These batteries can be recharged through various methods, including solar energy and grid electricity. Moreover, these planes are hybrid electric, which means they use both electric motors and fossil fuel engines to generate power. The fossil fuel engines are used to produce electricity, which is then used to power the electric motors. This hybrid approach helps extend the range of airplanes, enabling them to be more practical for commercial use.

Advances in battery technology in bringing a sustainable approach to aviation

The electric aircraft market has witnessed prominent growth due to notable technological advancements, and the rise of modern battery technology is one of them. Recently, researchers at Delft University of Technology and the startup Elysian have made a groundbreaking advancement in electric aviation with the development of a battery pack that boasts an energy density of 360 Wh/kg. This significant improvement enables a 90-passenger aircraft to achieve a range of up to 800 kilometers, marking a significant transition in the potential for larger electric aircraft capable of longer flights.

Traditionally, electric aviation has been constrained by the limitations of battery energy density, which is considerably lower than that of conventional jet fuel. However, the new design principles introduced by Elysian overcome the challenges about the feasibility of larger battery-electric aircraft. The E9X aircraft, which is expected to be operational by 2033, integrates batteries into the wings to optimize weight distribution and enhance aerodynamics.

This innovation has opened doors for more extensive applications in commercial aviation and positioned Elysian as a leader in sustainable air travel solutions. The research findings emphasize a promising future for electric flight, potentially reducing carbon emissions and helping develop eco-friendly alternatives in regional air travel. Moreover, with the rising emphasis on decarbonization, these advancements have enabled the aviation industry to achieve sustainable air travel goals.

First commercial electric passenger planes

In September 2024, Eviation Aircraft, a Washington State-based electric aircraft manufacturer proposed the launch of Alice, the first commercial electric passenger plane. The firm announced that it has planned to deliver the plane to companies like DHL and GlobalX by 2027. GlobalX plans to use the airplanes for passenger flights in Florida, the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

The Alice aircraft is designed to accommodate nine passengers and aims to revolutionize regional air travel by providing a sustainable, emission-free alternative. With a top speed of 300 mph and a range of up to 250 miles, it is optimized for commuter and cargo markets. Eviation has already secured substantial interest, with orders exceeding $5 billion from various operators, including Cape Air and Deutsche Post. As Eviation looks forward to expanding its portfolio in commercial aviation, Alice represents a remarkable innovation in achieving this goal. Being an electric aircraft, it possesses the potential to meet growing demands for environmentally friendly travel solutions.

Ampaire acquired Magpie for innovative aviation solutions

In March 2024, Ampaire Inc., a leading manufacturer of hybrid electric aircraft systems declared its acquisition of Magpie Aviation Inc., a renowned developer of innovative electric aviation technologies. With this acquisition, Ampaire aimed to expand its portfolio of technology and customer contracts by promoting the electrification of aviation and offering unique solutions to its customers. This agreement broadens the company’s IP and contract portfolio through Magpie’s multiple patents and government contracts. According to Kevin Noertker, the CEO of Ampaire, through this acquisition, the company is expected to increase its revenue growth across commercial and defense sectors while enhancing the capabilities and mission scope of its existing hybrid aircraft. In addition, the firm envisions multiplying its applications for its hybrid electric propulsion systems by integrating general aviation and regional turboprop commercial aircraft.

The crux

The landscape of electric aviation is rapidly evolving with new technologies and growing collaboration among industry players. Moreover, continuous improvement in battery technology and changing regulatory frameworks are expected to make sustainable air travel an imminent reality.
