Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology was first introduced in the 1970s and early 1980s as silicon micromachining. And microsensors based on MEMS technology were the first commercial applications adopted by automobile and medical industries. In the last couple of decades, the MEMS industry has been widely expanded along with manufacturing new versions of miniaturized technology to serve a wide range of sectors. Presently, MEMS sensor are commonly found in consumer electronics (CE) including smartphones, tablets, and video game systems. In addition, the technology is also integrated into a variety of other applications, including wearable electronics for the health and fitness markets.

The end-using industries are more often following the trend of adoption of ultra-low-power devices with a smaller footprint. With this, the manufacturers are now focusing on designing smarter MEMS products. In order to improve the applications associated with MEMS sensor, the industry is accepting challenges and initiating to integrate the technology with system-in-package (SiP) devices or smart miniaturized modules. Moreover, the market players are also adopting a number of new market strategies to boost industrial progress. Here are some of the recent happenings that are flourishing in the market.

New product launch is getting highly trending among the market players. With this, TDK Corporation, a Japanese multinational electronics company has recently announced the launch of its miniaturized ultra-low-power MEMS gas sensor platform InvenSense TCE-11101. The platform is designed to provide accurate and direct detection of CO2 for residential, IoT, healthcare, and other applications. Moreover, TCE-11101, offers orders of smaller magnitude, over the traditional sensors with its ground-breaking technology platform with the combinations of an exceptional combination of new material development, AI and machine learning capabilities, and MEMS process technologies.

Partnership & collaboration is another major strategy followed among the market players. One of the leading flow sensor manufacturing companies, Flusso has partnered with Pelion, an ARM-subsidiary and connected devices service provider. This aims to bring upon FLS110 flow sensor-based flow sensing products and systems. The FLS110 is the world’s smallest flow sensor, introduced in October 2020. It is a part of a complete digital flow sensing solution with a footmark of just 3.5 x 3.5 mm, designed for the high-volume consumer, industrial, and other cost-efficient applications. Consequently, the new partnership would offer the customers to focus on assimilating flow measurement and other advanced features into their newest IoT products.

Undeniably, there are certain challenges that are witnessed by the industry including a dearth of the standardized fabrication process for MEMS. Integration of the technology with devices without affecting the life is another challenge the companies are dealing with. However, with the potential for industrial progress and growth in the revenue the MEMS fabrication is likely to become more standardized. And with this, the commercialization of MEMS sensor is expected to come to its achievement.

A report published by Allied Market Research signified that the MEMS sensor market is expected to hit $60.6 million by 2026. The need for device miniaturization is approaching for various devices including smartphones, wearable devices, medical instruments, and other electronic devices. At the same time, the benefits associated with MEMS devices including less space requirement, low cost, and higher accuracy expand its demand. Moreover, the increase in adoption of wearable devices, trends associated with an autonomous vehicle, and innovations in the biomedical sector are some of the aspects that would pave the way for worthwhile opportunities in the coming time
