  • Introduction
  • Advancements in the vertiport industry
  • Strategic alliance among different stakeholders

Over the past few decades, growing vehicle traffic congestion and pollution have been some of the most acute problems faced by metropolitan cities, industrial towns, and other such urban areas. To address these issues, advanced technologies such as electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft have been launched. These air taxis and drones hover above suburbs and can be used to transport individuals and goods, and provide other services. eVTOLs are now increasingly being deployed in various countries due to their ability to bypass vehicle traffic and reach even the remotest areas easily. Another important reason behind eVTOL’s growing adoption is its characteristic feature of landing or taking off vertically, thus eliminating the need for runways. Instead, these machines require a designated area specifically designed for eVTOL flight operations, generally called vertiports.

Increasing role of eVTOLs and vertiports in urban mobility

The idea of vertiports first came up in 2015 in Chicago, USA, where 10 acres of land were developed to offer 24-hour refueling services, and 30,000 square feet of hangar space were created as fixed base operations for eVTOL and helicopter owners. Since then, vertiports have been developed in the UK, France, Singapore, and many other countries. The rising demand for drones and eVTOLs for urban transport has been the major reason behind the increasing investments in vertiport infrastructure development projects. As per a survey done by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, more than 70% of the respondents were in favor of using these advanced air mobility (AAM) solutions, especially for the transport of goods and services.

To cater to the changing dynamics of the landscape of urban mobility, aerospace companies have started developing vertiports with high-tech features and state-of-the-art support infrastructure. For instance, most of these facilities have advanced navigation and communication systems to help eVTOLs move safely through crowded city areas. Using these digital tools, air traffic control authorities transmit important data regarding weather and traffic conditions, navigation routes, etc., to the operator easily. Ultimately, this minimizes the risk of collision and crashing significantly, thereby improving the safety of the operator and passengers.

Along with this, vertiports also feature automated loading and unloading systems to simplify logistical and supply chain management tasks. As of today, eVTOLs are not yet fully accepted worldwide, and aerospace companies are still experimenting with various technologies to make these AAM solutions a safe and reliable option for human transport. Hence, currently, eVTOLs are primarily used by e-commerce companies, retailers, and other businesses to procure raw materials or deliver their finished goods. Hence, vertiports with automated loading and unloading support become important.

Increased investment by leading companies, helping the industry flourish

The vertiports industry accounted for $456 million in 2023 and is expected to gather a sum of $10.3 billion by 2033, rising at a CAGR of 36.3% during 2024-2033. The growing investments in vertiport infrastructure development projects and the strategic alliances established by major companies are expected to impact the industry positively in the future. In February 2024, Joby Aviation, Inc., a venture-backed aviation firm, announced a partnership agreement with Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA), a governmental agency, to launch air taxi services in the Emirate by 2026. Also, Joby Aviation has signed a deal with Skyports, a British eVTOL drone provider, to develop four vertiports across Dubai to provide logistical support to the upcoming air taxi service.

In January 2025, LYNEports, a software company, issued a press release announcing a partnership with Sarla Aviation, an eVTOL developer based in India. Over the years, LYNEports has gained a reputation as a leading vertiport operational planning company. Under this collaboration, both companies will look for optimal locations in different Indian cities to create vertiports, thus aiming to enhance connectivity between various urban areas and reduce traffic congestion.

In conclusion, the rising adoption of electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft in various metropolitan cities and towns has boosted the revenue share of the vertiport industry. Furthermore, the integration of new technologies and automation tools to modernize these infrastructure facilities is expected to augment the growth rate of the market. Additionally, the strategic alliances between private companies and governmental agencies to develop new vertiports are predicted to open new investment opportunities in the coming period.
