Over the past few years, with the constant rise in geopolitical issues, many countries have emphasized the strengthening of their arsenals to safeguard themselves. This has led to the development of advanced nuclear missiles and bombs. Advancements in nuclear technology have enabled the creation of more powerful and precise weapons such as thermonuclear devices and fission bombs. These powerful bombs and missiles can inflict mass casualties and cause catastrophic environmental damage.

Advanced types of nuclear bombs and missiles that ensure global security

Nuclear weapons include a wide range of powerful bombs and missiles to offer national security to many countries. Submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) are advanced nuclear missiles mainly designed as an undetectable launch platform for intercontinental missiles.  They are specifically designed for stealth and the precise delivery of nuclear warheads. SLBMs offer greater advantages over land-based or air-launched ballistic missiles. They provide increased range and accuracy and enhanced durability. Moreover, these missiles require less replenishment and maintenance. Moreover, the deployment of SLBMs also equips countries with second-strike capability. After making a first devastating strike, these missiles serve as a powerful deterrent against potential adversaries. The United States, Russia, China, France, India, and the United Kingdom are some of the countries that possess submarine-launched ballistic missiles. Because of their numerous advantages, the SLBM segment is expected to hold the highest share of the industry, generating a revenue of $16,519.7 million from 2023 to 2032.

Another popular type of nuclear weapon is the intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). These types of missiles were first deployed by the United States in 1959. Now, these types of missiles are considered an important weapon in the American arsenal. ICBMs mainly range between 6,000 to 9,000 miles, enabling continents to strike targets on the other side of the globe. Such missiles travel at high speed during their flight, reaching velocities of several kilometers per second. Some ICBMs are equipped with MIRVs (multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles), allowing them to carry multiple warheads to different targets during a single launch.

India’s Agni-5 ballistic missile

Recently, in March 2024, the Indian government announced the first flight test of its newly launched Agni-5 ballistic missile designed with MIRV technology. This Agni-5 ballistic missile test is named “Mission Divyastra”. It will be the first time such missiles are going to demonstrate MIRV technology. Some additional flight tests are going to take place to complete the development of an operational MIRV capability for the Agni-5. The test launch of Agni-5 with an advanced payload section, demonstrating MIRV capability, has become a significant development for India’s nuclear posture.

Some cutting-edge innovations transforming the industry landscape

The global nuclear bombs and missiles industry is experiencing significant growth due to the increase in initiatives made by governments of various nations and leading corporations to improve the efficiency, reliability, and technological sophistication of their arsenals. Several leading players in the domain have come up with innovative product launches and made alliances to safeguard the industry’s competitiveness. For instance, in October 2023, Raytheon, a major U.S. defense contractor and industrial corporation, and Rafael, an Israeli defense technology company announced together the launch of its new facility in East Camden, namely, Arkansas to churn out US-variant SkyHunter missiles for the Iron Dome air defense system. This new facility would be the first all-up-round production facility in the US to support the armed forces and allies globally with highly capable air-defense missiles.

Similarly, in July 2023, BAE Systems, a British multinational arms, security, and aerospace company announced the launch of its new innovation division, namely FalconWorks to focus on the development of next-generation capabilities in the air domain. According to Dave Holmes, the managing director of FalconWorks, this facility would be beneficial for UK and European air domain businesses such as Phantom Works and Shunk Works.

To wrap up, the emerging security concerns among nations due to the rise in cross-border conflicts are expected to foster the growth of the domain in the coming years. Furthermore, the rise in government initiatives and continuous technological advancements in designing powerful missiles are anticipated to create wide growth opportunities for the domain in the future.
