  • Health benefits of fatty acids and vegetable oils
  • Industrial applications of methyl esters and sulfurized derivatives

Many of the consumer goods products regularly used by households contain compounds such as fatty acids, vegetable oils, me esters, and sulfurized derivates. These bio-based ingredients act as building blocks of many food and beverage items, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and toiletries. In the past few years, as the consumption of sustainable compounds has increased, there has been a marked shift from goods containing synthetic chemicals toward bio-based products. Along with this, the growing awareness among people across the globe to have balanced diets and a healthy lifestyle has surged the consumption of eco-friendly food products and personal care goods.

Increased popularity of fatty acids and vegetable oils to boost immunity levels

Almost all vegetable oils are made up of fatty acids which upon digestion break down into fats. Fats are important for the body as they perform the function of energy storage. Moreover, these acids also improve the metabolism in the body. As per a study done at the São Paulo State University, Brazil, fatty acids and phenolic compounds contained in olive oil have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which help in enhancing the body’s metabolic rate. Also, these phenolic compounds have anti-blood clotting characteristics, thereby improving the digestion capabilities of the gut. Coconut oil has compounds like monolaurin which fight gut bacteria and viruses, boosting overall digestive health. In the long run, all these factors improve the body’s immunity and promote cell growth.

The anti-blood clotting properties of fatty acids aid in preventing blood clots and blockages in coronary arteries, thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. According to a study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, fatty acids reduce the level of blood sugars and serum cholesterol in the body which ultimately helps in keeping the heart healthy. Vegetable oils such as wheat germ oil, peanut oil, and almond oil are also rich in vitamin E which assist in moisturizing the skin tissues.

Many pharmaceutical companies are conducting R&D activities to develop vegetable oil-based products that would enhance overall human health. In October 2022, for instance, Epax, a marine ingredient innovator, announced the expansion of its NovusLipid portfolio with the launch of Cetoleic 10, an omega-11 polyunsaturated fatty acid. The company has claimed that this lesser-known fatty acid helps in reducing atherosclerosis and inflammation, thereby bringing down the risk of metabolic syndrome.

Environmental sustainability augmenting the demand for methyl esters and sulfurized derivates

As mentioned above, the fatty acids, vegetable oil, me esters, sulfurized industry is expected to witness huge growth in the coming period. The changing lifestyles of people around the world and the increasing awareness regarding environmental sustainability are the two main factors behind this trend. For instance, the growth in demand for eco-friendly cosmetic products has directly resulted in a rise in the applicability of methyl esters. These compounds are naturally produced which is why they are biodegradable and sustainable in nature. Conventional cosmetic products contain synthetic chemicals that ultimately get mixed with natural aquatic bodies like rivers, lakes, and ponds to cause algal bloom and eutrophication.

Apart from cosmetics, methyl esters are now also being used as ingredients in industrial products such as paints, adhesives, and lubricants to reduce the emission of greenhouse and ozone-depleting substances. With the growing emphasis on green buildings and carbon-neutral construction activities, the demand for environment-friendly paints and lubricants has surged, thereby broadening the scope of the fatty acids, vegetable oil, me esters, sulfurized industry.

Sulfurized derivatives, too, are used as raw materials in the cosmetics manufacturing industry due to their biodegradable and eco-friendly nature. Moreover, compounds such as sulfurized jojoba oil are particularly known for their anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties. As a result, these compounds are now used in shampoos and facewashes as anti-dandruff and anti-acne formulations.

To sum it up, the rise of fatty acids, vegetable oil, me esters, sulfurized landscape is attributed to the increasing demand for these bio-based compounds from the global household and industrial sector. The health benefits offered by vegetable oils and the diverse applicability of methyl esters and sulfurized derivates are expected to create new opportunities for growth in the industry in the coming period.
