Highlights
In the past few years, the aviation industry has faced extreme pressure to reduce its carbon footprint and adopt more sustainable practices. Owing to the rising concerns about climate change, there has been a shift in focus toward alternative fuels that have the potential to revolutionize air travel. Green hydrogen has emerged as a promising alternative for aircraft. Hydrogen fuel cells convert hydrogen gas and oxygen from the atmosphere into electricity through an electrochemical process.
Green hydrogen assists the aviation industry in achieving net-zero carbon emissions, a goal that has become important due to climate change. By adopting green hydrogen as a fuel source, airlines lower their environmental footprint and support a sustainable future. The hydrogen aircraft industry is anticipated to cite a noteworthy CAGR of 15.4% by 2050.
Supporting sustainability by reducing greenhouse gas emissions
Hydrogen-powered aircraft use hydrogen fuel cells or hydrogen-powered gas turbines for propulsion. These systems generate electricity through the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen, emitting only water vapor as a byproduct. The electric power generated drives the aircraft's propulsion, offering a cleaner and more efficient alternative to conventional jet engines. One of the primary advantages of hydrogen aircraft is their minimal environmental impact. They produce zero carbon emissions during flight, which contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and addressing climate change.
Enhancing hydrogen infrastructure for eco-friendly aviation
Expansion of hydrogen infrastructure is emerging as a notable trend in the coming years. This includes enhancing abilities for large-scale production and transportation. Adapting hydrogen as aviation fuel will require significant changes in the supply chain, including increasing production capacity and establishing efficient transport routes. This infrastructure development won't be exclusively for aviation, but the rising global demand for hydrogen is expected to facilitate easier access for the aviation sector to tap into this supply.
The growing landscape of the European hydrogen aircraft industry
Growing air travel demand in Europe is fueling the demand for efficient and eco-friendly aircraft. European governments, including those in Norway and Sweden, are actively supporting the development of hydrogen infrastructure at airports. This collaborative effort is essential in promoting the adoption of hydrogen-powered aircraft.
Moreover, continuous innovation in hydrogen fuel cell technology and infrastructure development in the region is improving the feasibility of hydrogen aircraft. This involves advancements in hydrogen production, storage, and distribution abilities. Prominent corporations such as Airbus, ZeroAvia, and others are investing in hydrogen-powered aircraft development. This competition promotes innovation and accelerates industry expansion. For instance, Airbus is leading an innovative project in aviation hydrogen refueling and handling, with support from airport operators, key hydrogen industry players, and academic partners. This initiative aims to showcase ground operations for small-scale liquid hydrogen aircraft at three European airports. The goal to achieve Europe’s energy independence is driving a significant trend toward utilizing hydrogen for stationery and mobility applications.
Another significant development is American Airlines and ZeroAvia entered an agreement for the acquisition of 100 hydrogen engines in July 2024. ZeroAvia is upgrading hydrogen-electric engine technology for commercial aviation, aiming for zero emissions during flights. The organization is presently testing flights using a prototype designed for an aircraft with capacity of 20 seats and working on engines for larger models that American Airlines uses on specific regional routes.
Alliances promoting the usage of hydrogen as a fuel for aircraft
The hydrogen aircraft industry is transforming due to a surge in environmental awareness and zero-emission targets, high suitability of hydrogen as an aircraft fuel, and a rise in air passenger traffic across the world. Leading players in the industry are adopting novel strategies such as collaborations, investments in R&D activities for new product launches, mergers, and acquisitions to dominate the competitive industry. For instance, a provider of hydrogen fuel services utilizing modular hydrogen capsule technology, Universal Hydrogen Co., and a global leader in airport ground support equipment, JBT AeroTech, announced a joint development agreement in October 2023.
In this partnership, Universal Hydrogen contributed its modular hydrogen delivery system, originally designed for hydrogen aircraft but also suitable for ground equipment. The company offers hydrogen fuel services to customers using the H2AmpCart™ at airports, requiring no additional on-site infrastructure.
To sum up, the move to hydrogen-powered aircraft marks a significant advancement in aviation's journey toward sustainability. Moreover, hydrogen's ability to produce zero carbon emissions during flight, coupled with its expanding infrastructure support, makes it a promising solution to reduce the aviation industry's environmental impact and achieve sustainable climate goals.
