Due to the growing demand for basic and intermediate training among air forces globally, the segment of the military trainer aircraft industry is expected to generate an absolute revenue of $3236.9 million from 2022 to 2032.

After mastering basic flight skills, pilots progress to learn advanced training which includes complex maneuvers, instrumentation, and operating weapon systems. In this training, pilots are provided with the knowledge of techniques such as acrobatics, formation flying, and low-level navigation. They are also trained for handling advanced instrumentation, including cockpit instruments and avionics for navigation and communication. Along with this, pilots are also trained in basic weaponry and targeting systems. T-38 Talon and Hawk T2 are common choices that are widely used for sophisticated avionics and performance closer to that of frontline combat aircraft. The advanced pilot training segment is expected to garner a revenue of 2820.6 million over the forecast period.

Fueling innovations in the domain - Public-private partnerships

Nowadays, the defense sector is increasingly adopting public-private partnerships to overcome budget constraints in manufacturing trainer aircraft. Several countries have started exploring joint initiatives between government agencies and private industry to develop and manufacture trainer platforms.

For instance, in March 2023, India’s defense ministry signed an agreement with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), an Indian public sector aerospace and defense company, to procure 70 HTT-40 basic trainer aircraft for approximately $816 million (Rs 6,800 crore). This training aircraft was indigenously designed and developed by the Aircraft Research Center of HAL, based on the training requirements of the IAF. HTT-40 is a fully aerobatic aircraft, powered by a four-bladed turbo-prop engine. It is fitted with a state-of-the-art glass cockpit, modern avionics, and the latest safety features, including a zero-ejection seat. The trainer aircraft has a maximum speed of 450 kilometers per hour and a maximum service ceiling of six kilometers. This procurement included a full mission simulator for the HTT-40, which will supplement the aerial training, allowing pilots to practice different profiles on the ground.                

Visionary initiatives taken by top players transforming the industry landscape

To strengthen the defense environment, several leading companies in this domain have made profitable alliances and come forward with innovative approaches. For instance, in June 2023, Airbus Flight Academy Europe, a 100% subsidiary of Airbus that supplies training services for the French Armed Forces pilots and civilian cadets signed a MoU with AURA AERO, a leading aircraft manufacturer specialized in fully electric designs to decarbonize pilot training by introducing electric-powered aircraft for commercial and military pilot formation.

Under this agreement, Airbus Flight Academy Europe aimed to develop INTEGRAL E, a fully electric, two-seater trainer aircraft, ideally suited for the initial stages of pilot training. While operating from an airfield equipped with superchargers, the INTEGRAL E aircraft is designed to be charged in 20 to 30 minutes, granting the aircraft an hour of flight endurance.  Jean Longobardi, CEO of Airbus Flight Academy Europe, said that with this partnership, the academy envisioned operating a low-carbon aircraft fleet by 2030.

To sum up, the rise of multi-role trainer aircraft by air forces across the globe to serve operational missions such as light attack, intelligence gathering, and maritime patrol are expected to boost the growth of the sector in the future.
